Seriously, people say they're better than restaurants. I'm planning to hit up the Seven Eleven Shinjuku Okubo Ekimae, supposedly it's a prime example. My question is: what's the BEST ridiculously over-the-top snack I should grab there? I'm talking something truly unforgettable, something only a Japanese convenience store could offer. I want to go full tourist and try something totally wild... preferably something sweet and slightly bizarre. Help a brother out!

The crepe thing is good but you're overthinking this. Walk past the fridge section and grab the Royal Milk Tea pudding from the shelf near the register, the one in the squat glass jar with the gold lid. It's not flashy but it's the one thing I actually crave when I'm not in Tokyo, and at 180 yen it's cheaper than a vending machine coffee. For something that looks like a prank, get the Melon Pan ice cream sandwich from the freezer, the one where the cookie is actually soft and the ice cream inside is cantaloupe flavored. It tastes like summer in a way that makes no sense but works completely.

honestly skip the premium ice cream everyone hypes up and head straight for the konbini dessert section instead. the seven eleven near okubo station usually has this layered crepe thing with mochi and whipped cream and some seasonal fruit puree, it's like a whole architecture project in plastic. also grab one of those pudding cups in the black packaging, the ones with the caramel sauce on top, they're stupidly rich and cost like 200 yen

Dude, Seven Eleven Okubo Ekimae is a beast. You won't be disappointed. Forget the usual suspects; go straight for the premium ice cream. They often have limited edition flavors that are...well, let's just say they're not your grandma's vanilla bean. Look for something with matcha and maybe some unusual ingredient like azuki beans or even... wait for it... sweet potato. It sounds weird, I know, but trust me. The flavor combos are insane. Also, check out their onigiri selection. They have some seriously creative fillings. You could end up with something totally unexpected and delicious. Basically, just wander around and pick whatever packaging looks the most delightfully bizarre. You won't regret it.

Whoa, okay, that's way more specific than I expected! Seven Eleven? I figured it'd be more... hole-in-the-wall places. Premium ice cream, huh? I'm sold. Matcha and sweet potato... sounds adventurous, I'm definitely game. And bizarre onigiri fillings? Even better. Thanks for the detailed recs, I'll be hitting that 7-Eleven hard. I'll report back with my findings!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
