I've heard the konbini in Japan are next level. Seriously, the selection, the quality...it's legendary. But my Japanese is...well, let's just say it's still in the 'pointing-and-mumbling' phase. What's the best way to order something unusual, like a specific onigiri flavour, without butchering the language completely? I'm terrified of accidentally ordering something wildly inappropriate or just ending up with something totally different from what I wanted. I'm picturing myself pointing at a picture and then getting five different variations of that thing... Any tips from someone who's been there, done that?

just a heads up, that lawson three is actually one of the busiest in shinjuku so the staff are speed-running everything. if you stand there fumbling with your phone they'll just ring up the next person. best move is to grab the onigiri yourself from the shelf near the register, the plastic wrap has a little tab you peel back so you can see the filling through the clear part. no guessing needed. also if you want something warm like the fried chicken, just point at the hot case and hold up one finger, they'll grab it with tongs and ask if you want it heated. the whole process takes like 15 seconds

honestly just point and say "kore" (this one) while pointing at the thing you want, that's what everyone does even locals sometimes. the cashiers at lawson three are used to tourists so they'll prob just confirm with a nod and scan it. if you're worried about getting the wrong onigiri flavor, the packages have little pictures on them so just match the photo to what you want, tuna mayo is the one with the yellow wrapper usually

tbh the whole "accidentally ordering something inappropriate" thing is overblown, like the worst that happens is you get a weird snack you don't like. i once pointed at a random drink and got some kind of salty plum soda, wasn't great but not a disaster either. just go for it, the staff there see this all day every day

Download a translation app. Seriously, Google Translate is your friend. Point at the picture, let the app translate what you think you want, then show the phone to the cashier. If they look confused, just smile and point at the picture again. Worst-case scenario, you get something unexpected...and that's part of the adventure! Embrace the chaos. It's all part of the fun of being in @Tokyo. Plus, Japanese people are generally super helpful and patient. You'll be fine.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
