Shinjuku 7-11 Enigma

Everyone raves about the Seven Eleven near Shinjuku Grand Plaza, it's legendary, apparently. I've heard tales of it being bigger than some small grocery stores I've seen back home. But seriously, is it really that much bigger and better stocked than other 7-11s in Japan? I mean, it's got to be amazing to warrant all the hype, right? I'm picturing aisles overflowing with bizarre and wonderful Japanese snacks, maybe even a whole section dedicated to limited edition Pocky flavours. My biggest concern is whether I'll even be able to navigate it without getting hopelessly lost. What's the best strategy for conquering this retail behemoth?

Yeah, the Shinjuku 7-Eleven near the Grand Plaza is no joke. It's seriously massive. Think less "convenience store" and more "small supermarket." They've got a crazy selection, way beyond your average 7-Eleven. You'll definitely find those limited edition Pocky flavors, and a ton of other stuff you won't see elsewhere. Don't get me started on the onigiri selection...

My strategy? Go in with a plan. Don't just wander aimlessly. Check out the layout quickly, it's surprisingly well-organized, even with its size, and then grab what you need. Otherwise, you will get lost. It's like a maze of deliciousness. Seriously, though, it's worth the visit, even if just for the sheer spectacle of it all. Prepare to be amazed.

Wow, I knew it was big, but "small supermarket" is a pretty accurate description! I totally get the "go in with a plan" thing, I can already imagine getting completely overwhelmed. Limited edition Pocky, huh? Sold. Onigiri selection... my stomach is rumbling just reading that. Thanks for the heads-up, I'll definitely be checking out the layout first, otherwise, I'm gonna be there for hours!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
