I've heard crazy stories about these Family Marts, apparently, they're way more than just convenience stores in Japan. Like, one time, I read about a guy who found a vintage manga in one, another said they saw a cat sleeping on the shelves. What's the weirdest thing you've encountered or seen in a Family Mart in Shinjuku? Seriously curious because I'm planning my itinerary around maximizing my chances of seeing some off-the-wall stuff...lol.

fwiw the one on kuyakusho-dori is actually where i saw a guy try to return a half-eaten onigiri because he didnt like the filling. the clerk just refunded him without a receipt, no questions asked. also they usually have a basket of old keychains and gacha toys near the register, i once found a tiny plastic octopus holding a beer can there. prob not as wild as the kabukicho stuff but its got its own charm

oh man, i once walked into the one near the shinjuku post office and there was this old dude just casually eating instant ramen at the counter at 3am while watching horse racing on his phone. nobody batted an eye. also seen a salaryman trying to buy a beer with a 10,000 yen bill and the clerk just shrugged and grabbed change from under the register. japanese convenience stores are a whole other world.

honestly the weirdest thing i saw was at the famima near shinjuku station's east exit, around 2am. some guy came in, grabbed a bento and a can of strong zero, then just stood in front of the magazine rack reading a whole chapter of a manga without buying it. clerk didn't care at all. also once saw a tourist try to use the toilet key and it was just a literal metal key tied to a huge plastic spoon, felt like a relic from 1995. those late-night shinjuku famimas are basically free theater

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
