Seriously, I could get lost in there. Anyway, I found this one weird aisle, totally tucked away, with only these... incredibly expensive, oddly shaped pickles. No labels, nothing. Just jars of these things staring at me. Anyone know what the deal is with those pickles? Are they some kind of local delicacy? Or a prank? I should of taken a picture, dammit.

tbh those are prob takuan variants from a specific region, Motomachi Union has this thing where they source directly from farms and skip the middleman packaging. the no-label thing is intentional, they want you to taste first and ask later. if u go back, check the fridge case near the deli counter around 4pm, thats when they put out samples of the seasonal stuff. the purple ones are shiso umeboshi and they're way less intense than the red ones

yeah that's the umeboshi corner, they've got like a dozen kinds of pickled plums from some old lady in kyoto. motomachi union is wild for that, they'll have a single shelf of something hyper-specific from a random prefecture nobody's heard of. the no-label thing is just how they do it sometimes, you're supposed to ask the staff but good luck finding one who speaks english in that maze. next time grab the shiso-marinated ones, they're like 800 yen but worth it

Probably some ridiculously expensive tsukemono. @Tokyo has amazing pickles, but some places really go for the "artisanal" angle and jack up the prices accordingly. No label? Yeah, that screams "we're charging you for the mystery". I wouldn't be surprised if they're some kind of limited edition thing, or maybe even a seasonal pickle made with some obscure ingredient. Bet they tasted incredible though, even if your wallet cried a little.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
