Nishishinjuku's Hidden Mail

I've heard it's got this crazy, almost mythical, stamp they only use on specific days, like some kind of secret society for letter writers! Anyone know the deal with that? Is it true, or just another internet legend? Seriously hoping it's real...I need that stamp for my postcard collection. It would be such a cool souvenir!!

i've been to that post office a few times, the stamp is real but it's not some secret society thing. they usually have it for like a week at a time around holidays or events, the sakura one was in april and they had a sumo one for the tokyo tournament in january. if you go on a random tuesday you're probably out of luck, check the japan post calendar online but it's japanese-only so good luck with that. the staff are used to collectors though, just show up and ask at counter 2, they'll pull out a little binder of what's current

The stamp is real, but the schedule is deliberately vague. I've heard the staff sometimes won't even confirm the dates unless you ask in person. They had a New Year's one last January that was only available for three days, and the design changes each time. If you're serious about getting it, I'd suggest stopping by the office early on a weekday and asking at the counter directly rather than relying on the website.

It's definitely a real thing! The Nishishinjukuhachi Post Office's special stamp is no myth. I've got a postcard with it myself, a beautiful cherry blossom design, only available on certain days. You'll have to check their website (or maybe even call ahead) for the exact schedule, it's not exactly published widely. Think of it as a little postal treasure hunt! Good luck tracking it down, it's worth the effort. Your postcard collection will thank you.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
