It's always packed, right? Anyway, I was looking for yuzu kosho, it's my favorite thing to put on ramen, and I swear, I searched EVERY aisle. It wasn't there. I even asked a worker

oh man i know exactly which my basket you mean, it's the one near the shinjuku gyoenmae station exit right? that place is basically a hallway with groceries crammed in. yuzu kosho is a stretch for them tbh, they barely stock decent soy sauce

if you're still in that area, head towards the shinjuku gyeon side and go to the national garden itself, there's a little cafe on the grounds that sells local condiments sometimes but that's hit or miss. honestly for yuzu kosho i'd just go to the kyushu food shop on yotsuya dori, it's a 15 min walk from the garden's front gate. they have like four different kinds from kumamoto and saga, all under 400 yen and way fresher than anything you'll find at a chain

if u have time, walk over to okawacho shotengai, it's like 5 mins from the garden's back exit. there's a small mom and pop spice shop called yamaya, they carry yuzu kosho from oita that's way punchier than the standard kochi stuff. i grab a jar there for like 380 yen whenever i'm in the area

the worker probably had no idea either, those guys are mostly part timers who just stock shelves. if you're near shinjuku gyoen anyway, walk over to kinokuniya on takano baba dori, they have a decent selection of yuzu kosho from kochi prefecture. it's on the second floor near the cooking oils, about 500 yen a jar

Anyone know if they still do the pour over set before 9? I usually just grab a can from the conbini on the corner instead.

The pour over set is still on before 9, though I'd skip the conbini can and get a drip at Kissa Maruyama on the back street instead.

If the line's already round the corner, there's a tiny standing bar two blocks toward the station doing 300 yen hand drips from 6:30. Tbh I prefer it anyway, quieter and the owner roasts his own beans. Weekends I'm in and out before Daybreak even opens.

honestly 7am is still late for me, i'm usually out by 5:30 and the only thing open is Komeda's, which is fine if u just want a strong kohi and a seat. there's also a gas station vending machine near the intersection that does hot canned coffee for 120 yen, sounds grim but it hits at that hour.
