Tokyo Hospital Food?

I've heard stories... hospital food is notoriously bad, right? But I'm also hearing whispers about their cafeteria having surprisingly decent ramen. Is this true?! Seriously considering packing my own snacks, but a good bowl of ramen after surgery would be a godsend. Anyone been there recently? Spill the tea on the Omori Red Cross Hospital food situation. Need to know if I should be stocking up on protein bars or if I should of just embraced the ramen rumors.

honestly the hospital food there is fine, not amazing but not the horror stories you hear. the cafeteria does have a ramen station but it's more of a simple shoyu broth, not some life-changing bowl. i'd grab it if you're hungry but don't set your expectations too high

if you're really worried about snacks, there's a 7-Eleven right across from the hospital on Omori-Kita street, takes like 3 mins to walk. grab some onigiri and protein jelly drinks there, way easier than packing your own stuff. the hospital kitchen does a decent curry rice too, that's prob their best bet tbh

one thing nobody mentions is the timing - the cafeteria closes around 7pm so if your procedure runs late you're stuck with whatever the ward has. i'd bring a couple protein bars just in case, but you won't starve

the ramen rumors are kinda overblown tbh, it's a basic bowl you'd find at a chain shop. the real hidden move is the hospital bakery section in the morning, they do a decent anpan and melon pan that beats the cafeteria stuff by a mile. grab those before they sell out around 10am.

if you're gonna pack snacks, skip the protein bars and hit up the drugstore on the main road toward Omori station instead. they have those calorie mate blocks and pocari sweat jelly packs that actually taste okay and are way more portable. the hospital rooms don't have minifridges either so keep that in mind.

yeah the ramen's alright but honestly the hospital's french toast breakfast is the real sleeper hit, comes with a little butter packet and syrup situation that's way better than it has any right to be for a hospital kitchen. just make sure you circle it on the menu form they give you the night before or the nurses will default you to the sad plain rice option.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
