if ur still hunting, the real tell is the paper lanterns, most ramen places in that area hang one outside but only the good ones keep it lit past 9pm. hyakunincho sits right on the chuo line so you get a ton of tiny counters packed between the love hotels & the korean bbq spots, walk the back lane behind okubo-dori instead of the main drag. also fwiw the shop everyone posts about closed for renovation last month, so dont waste an hour looking for a shutter
Getting lost there is almost a rite of passage. One thing nobody mentions: the block numbering resets in confusing ways once you cross certain intersections, so a 2-chome address can sit right next to a 1-chome one with no rhyme or reason. If you're hunting ramen, honestly just pick a spot with a queue of locals and skip the famous one, the wait at the hyped places can eat two hours of your trip.
shinjuku's grid is actually worse than ppl admit because the chome numbers were assigned by when blocks got built not by geography, so 2-chome 15 sits nowhere near 2-chome 14. what saved me was dropping pins in google maps before i left the station wifi, since data in those alleys is spotty & you'll be standing at a 4 way corner with 4 identical konbini staring back. also if its the tsukemen place you mean its down a stairwell under the yamanote tracks, look for the plastic curtain not the sign

honestly the tanuki on the north loop past the pond are bold now and the itachi mostly clear out the mice near the bamboo grove by 6am
yeah the itachi are out early but its the kiji-bato and karasu taking over the food scraps thats teh real change
The north loop tanuki are denning under the fenced shed by the west gate now, which is why they don't scatter when you pass.
That shed's been padlocked since April so they've shifted to the drainage culvert behind the west gate toilets.
fair point on the culvert. i've been seeing scat along teh top of it most mornings now, more than a couple piles. think theyre using it as a latrine not a den tbh
