The pumps were ancient, felt like I was fueling a spaceship from the 70s. The attendant... well, let's just say his customer service skills needed some serious work. He barely looked up, grunted something about the price, and then just stared at his phone. The whole place felt a bit dodgy, honestly. Anyone else have a similar experience there? Is it always this... desolate?

That Okubo station has been like that for at least a decade. The pumps are original from when it opened in the 70s and they've never bothered to update them. There's a 24-hour Shell on Yasukuni-dori closer to Waseda that's clean, the attendants actually speak to you, and the card readers work on the first try. Takes about 10 minutes from Okubo by car.

ngl that place has been sketchy for years. i live in okubo and everyone i know avoids it. there's a self-serve station on oume kaido near higashi-nakano that's way faster and the machines actually work.

arrow_drop_up 4 arrow_drop_down

Yeah, that station's a real trip. I've been going to a different one closer to Shinjuku for years now, way better experience. Prices are usually pretty competitive too. That Okubo place sounds like it's stuck in a time warp, and the service... oof. Definitely not somewhere I'd go out of my way for. Maybe they're short-staffed or something, but still, that's no excuse for that level of apathy.

Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?

Staying near one next month and wondering if Foodland is more of a local basics store or actually good for cheap meals and snacks. any must buy items there? foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.

Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.

Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.

Their hot deli case, cheap and filling.

Check the meat counter, 50% off after 7pm.

store brand milk & tofu, cheapest in the neighborhood

honestly the onigiri are fine but the real move is the frozen gyoza, cheap and decent. dunno why nobody mentions it. maybe google the rest.

karaage there is solid but ask them to re-fry it if it's been sitting, way better hot
