Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital Waiting Room Blues

My friend, who lives near there, says the waiting room is legendary, not in a good way. Apparently, it's a bizarre mix of cutting-edge technology and seriously outdated furniture. He described it as a time warp. He even showed me pics of a super modern digital display next to a chair that looked like it came from a 1950s dentist's office. So, my question is: What's the actual vibe like in that waiting room? Is it as chaotic as he makes it out to be? Seriously considering bringing a book... and maybe a comfy cushion.

ngl the waiting room vibe is exactly what your friend said, that time warp thing is real. but the real chaos is the seating system, you check in at a digital kiosk then get assigned a color group, and people just hover around the entrance like vultures waiting for their number to flash on the big screen. my pro tip is to grab a seat at the FamilyMart across the street on the second floor, they have a little eating area with decent chairs and you can see the hospital entrance from the window so you won't miss your turn. bring the book for sure, the magazines there are all from 2019

honestly the vibe is less chaotic and more confusing like stepping into a time machine that broke mid-journey. the digital check-in screen shows wait times in real time but the chairs are legit from the 80s with that weird plastic that gets sticky in summer. i'd bring the book but skip the cushion, there's a combo bakery/cafe on the first floor that sells decent anpan and the seats there are way comfier if you wanna bail for a bit. just keep an eye on the queue number board from your phone

Yeah, my aunt had surgery there a few months back. The waiting room is... interesting. It's less chaotic and more just... jarring. Think sterile modernism clashing violently with something your grandpa would've found comfortable. The tech is top-notch, all shiny screens and self-check-in kiosks, but then you're sitting on a chair that's seen better decades. It's not unpleasant, exactly, just...unexpected. A book and cushion are definitely a good idea. Maybe even noise-cancelling headphones. Good luck with your check-up!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
