Lost in Translation at Seven Eleven?

It's...intense. The sheer volume of meticulously organized snacks and drinks is overwhelming. I tried to buy a simple onigiri, but the vending machine-esque selection process almost broke me. I ended up with something that tasted vaguely of seafood and regret. My question is: Is there a secret code or guide to navigating the 7-Eleven in Japan, specifically this one near the Daiwa Roynet? I'm pretty sure I saw a salaryman effortlessly grab what he needed, and then just...leave. How?!

the onigiri are usually near the register, not in the main aisles, that's probably where u got lost. look for the clear plastic shelf by the counter, salmon and tuna mayo are the safe picks, the kombu one is fine too. also those "vending machine" touch panels let u pick hot or cold for the coffee, and the staff will heat ur food if u point at the microwave

Haha, yeah, 7-Eleven in Japan is a whole other level. It's like a beautifully curated museum of convenience store delights...that will also slowly drive you insane. There's no secret code, sadly. It's just...years of practice. Those salarymen? They've probably been shopping there since they were kids. My advice? Point, grunt, and hope for the best. Or, download a translation app and maybe take a photo of what you want before going in. If all else fails, just stick to the basics, bottled drinks are your friend. Seriously, though, the sheer variety is astounding. You'll figure it out eventually...eventually. Good luck!

those touch panels are for hot drinks mostly, and the onigiri fridge is usually the one facing the window not the aisle. tbh the move is to watch what the person in front of u grabs and copy that, thats literally the salaryman hack.

Is Foodland in Tokyo worth a stop for groceries in 2026?

Staying near one next month and wondering if Foodland is more of a local basics store or actually good for cheap meals and snacks. any must buy items there? foodland is basically a discount grocer so don't expect a full meal setup, but the prepared bento and onigiri near the register are cheap and fine for a quick lunch. grab the store brand yogurt drinks and any marked down sashimi if u see it early

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Agree on the sashimi, but go before 10am since the 20-30% off stickers land early and the good trays vanish by noon.

Weekday mornings beat weekends, shelf gets wiped by 9.

Yogurt drinks go fast on weekends.

Their hot deli case, cheap and filling.

Check the meat counter, 50% off after 7pm.

store brand milk & tofu, cheapest in the neighborhood

honestly the onigiri are fine but the real move is the frozen gyoza, cheap and decent. dunno why nobody mentions it. maybe google the rest.

karaage there is solid but ask them to re-fry it if it's been sitting, way better hot
