I popped into the Family Mart on Shinjuku Kuyakusho-dori, the one near the government building, to grab a Pocari Sweat. It was packed, super busy even for a convenience store in Tokyo. But this one... it felt different. Almost like there was a second, hidden section or something. I swear I saw a flicker of movement in the back, behind the stacked boxes of onigiri, but when I looked again, nothing. Anyone else experienced anything odd at that particular Family Mart? Maybe it's just my imagination fueled by jet lag and too much ramen. Or maybe they've got a secret stash of really good melon pan they're hoarding...?

Nah, you're not alone. That Family Mart is weird. I've been in that one a bunch of times, and it always feels weirdly busy, even at 3 AM. The layout's kinda...off. Like, there are these odd little dead ends and alcoves that don't seem necessary. I've never seen anything super spooky, but the vibe is definitely... unsettled. Maybe they're hiding something. Maybe they're training ninjas. Probably just a really inefficient stockroom, though. But the unsettling vibe is real.

Seriously? Ninjas?! Okay, that's way more interesting than inefficient stockroom management. I thought I was losing it. The layout is bizarre, like they just randomly threw shelves together. And the lighting... it's so weirdly dim in some spots, even with all those fluorescent lights. It's like they're trying to create a specific atmosphere. Maybe not ninjas, but something's definitely up. I'm gonna go back tonight, armed with a flashlight and a much stronger sense of suspicion. Wish me luck!

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
