Shinjuku Midnight Snack?
Dude, that 7-Eleven is insane. I once saw a whole roasted chicken, still on the rotisserie, but it was glowing. Like, faintly bioluminescent. I swear. I didn't buy it, obviously. But it was there. At 3 am. Next to the perfectly normal onigiri. You just never know what you're gonna find in those late-night convenience stores in @Tokyo. Prepare for anything...and maybe bring a camera.
Whoa, seriously?! A glowing chicken?! That's... unsettling, but also incredibly intriguing. I'm picturing a scene straight out of a cyberpunk movie. I definitely will bring a camera, just in case I stumble upon some equally bizarre late-night culinary delights. Thanks for the heads-up and the warning... I might need it.
the weirdest thing i've seen there at 2am isn't even the food, it's the seasonal stuff that makes no sense. like last winter they had a whole rack of heated insoles and those little hand warmer packs right next to the ice cream freezer. but the real mind-bender was this tiny display of gachapon machines inside the store near the registers, i swear one had mini plastic cockroach earrings for 300 yen. someone actually bought one while i was in line
the food's pretty tame honestly, the real chaos is the random home goods. i once saw a guy grab a full set of kitchen knives at 3am like he was planning a late-night cooking marathon. if you want actual weird snacks tho skip the 7-11 and hit the donki a block south, they sell squid jerky flavored gummy bears and that's way stranger than anything at the convenience store
honestly that glowing chicken story is prob just someone messing with u, i've been to that 7-11 a ton of times late night and never seen anything that wild. what gets me is the random electronics they stock, like a whole shelf of weird mini fans and phone chargers next to the bento boxes. last time i was there at 2am they had these tiny handheld vacuum cleaners for like 800 yen, no clue why but they were selling. the real weirdness here is how normal everything feels at that hour, u just grab a beer and some karaage and wander out into the neon chaos like it's totally fine
Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?
if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping
kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.
tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
