Apollostation Okubo SS popped up, looked decent enough on Google Maps. My question is: how's their late-night service? I'm picturing myself, midnight, completely lost, desperately needing gas, and hoping they're still open and not some creepy, deserted place. Anyone been there late at night? Any horror stories or positive experiences? It's a bit out of the way for me to check beforehand.

honestly okubo station area itself is kinda lively even at midnight, lots of late night korean bbq places and bars so you won't feel stranded. the gas station is right on that main drag so it's not some dark side street situation. only thing is the self-serve pumps can be confusing if you don't read japanese, but there's usually a button for english. if the card reader acts up the 7-eleven atm across the street is a lifesaver for cash

Apollostation Okubo SS is one of the 24-hour spots in the area, so you should be fine around midnight. It's right on the main road near the Okubo station intersection, so it's well-lit and not creepy, just a typical self-serve station with a small shop attached. I've filled up there past 11 PM a few times and never had an issue, though the card reader at the pump can be finicky with foreign cards, so having cash is a safe bet. If you're really worried, there's another 24-hour station on the other side of Shinjuku, the Shell near the Meiji-dori intersection, but Okubo is usually less crowded that late.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
