I'm trying to get to @Kyoto next week and my rental car's tank is looking pretty empty. I stopped at apollostation Okubo SS yesterday, it's super convenient if you're near Shinjuku, but the price was, well, let's just say Tokyo prices. My question is: are there any lesser-known gas stations around that area, maybe smaller family-run ones, that offer slightly better deals? Trying to budget for my trip... I'd appreciate any tips!

honestly for the cheapest gas around Shinjuku you gotta head out a bit. there's a self-serve Cosmo station on Route 4 towards Yotsuya, it's not super well marked but it's usually 5-7 yen cheaper than the Apollostation. also check out the small place on Waseda Dori near Takadanobaba, it's a family-run spot that's been there forever and they sometimes run little discounts if you pay cash

but tbh if you're heading to Kyoto you'll prob find better prices once you get past Kanagawa. fill up just enough to get out of Tokyo then top off near Odawara or Numazu, prices drop noticeably there. the Cosmo at the Odawara Atsugi Road interchange is usually solid

check the app "gogo gs" if you haven't already, it shows real time prices for every station around you. there's a tiny umehara gas stand near nakano that's always a few yen cheaper but they close early like 6pm so gotta time it right

Yeah, Tokyo gas prices are brutal. Apollostation is usually pretty pricey. You're not going to find significantly cheaper gas, especially in a central area like Shinjuku, but you might shave off a few yen by checking out some of the smaller independent stations further out from the main hubs. Look for ones that aren't part of the big chains like Eneos or Idemitsu, sometimes those smaller places have slightly better rates, though it's not always guaranteed. Honestly, your best bet for saving money on fuel might be to fill up before you leave Tokyo proper, maybe somewhere along the way to Kyoto. Gas prices usually fluctuate outside the big cities, so you might get lucky. Good luck with your trip!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
