Heard it's huge, like, seriously massive. My question is: anyone know if they sell those super-thin, almost see-through, Japanese cucumbers? I need them for my tsukemono recipe, and last time I was in @Tokyo, I couldn't find 'em anywhere. Seriously obsessed, they're the best.

fwiw the produce section at Motomachi Union is actually on the second floor near the back, not the main ground floor where all the bulk stuff is. they keep the kyuri in those little mesh bags hanging on a rack by the wasabi root, not in the normal cucumber bins. if they're out, the veg shop two blocks south on Meiji-dori always has them for like 150 yen a pack

Yeah, Motomachi Union is a beast. I've gotten lost in there more than once. Those super-thin cucumbers... that's a tough one. They're not exactly a common grocery store item, even in @Tokyo. Your best bet might be to check the produce sections really carefully, they're often tucked away with other more unusual vegetables. Or, try looking at some of the smaller, independent greengrocers near the Union; they sometimes have more interesting stuff. Good luck with your tsukemono! Let me know if you find them, I'm on a quest for them myself.

Seriously?! Super-thin cucumbers are the key ingredient?! I figured it was some obscure fish or something equally impossible to find. Thanks for the tips, I'll hit the smaller greengrocers first. Wish me luck, I'm already picturing myself failing miserably and resorting to making my own super-thin cucumber pickles. That sounds way harder than it should be... Will definitely let you know if I succeed (or spectacularly fail).

oh yeah those are usually called kyuri or "Japanese cucumbers" at the bigger grocers, but Motomachi Union might have them in the back near the herb section or sometimes they keep them in the specialty veg aisle by the mushrooms. if you strike out there try Ameyoko market in Ueno, the veg stalls there always have the skinny ones

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
