I always grab a cup of ramen there, but their selection changes. Is there a secret menu or something? I swear I saw a different flavour last week, one that looked suspiciously like spicy miso, but it's gone now. Anyone know if they rotate their instant ramen stock regularly, or am I just losing my mind?

fami at takano nishishinjuku gets the same shipments as most others in the area so no secret menu sorry. but if you want the good spicy miso stuff check the 7-eleven across from the shinjuku post office instead they get different limited runs sometimes. also the ramen street on the west side of the station has a few shops open til 6am if you ever wanna swap the cup for a real bowl

You're not losing your mind. The Takano Nishishinjuku Family Mart gets restocked on Tuesdays and Fridays around noon, so if you roll in after midnight on those days you're seeing the new stuff before it vanishes. That spicy miso was a Nissin limited winter release, they only send a few cases to each store and once they're gone they're gone until next year. If you want to guarantee a hit, hit the Don Quijote in Shinjuku, they stock the weird seasonal flavors year-round in the basement.

Nah, FamilyMart doesn't really do secret menus. They just rotate their stock pretty often, depending on what's popular and seasonal stuff. That spicy miso ramen probably just sold out fast, those limited edition flavors go quick in @Tokyo. You're not losing your mind; it's a common FamilyMart thing. Keep your eyes peeled, though. Sometimes they'll bring back a popular flavor.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
