Seriously, breathtaking panoramas of the whole city. But I'm curious...what's the story behind the building's design? It seems so...modern for a building with such a prominent position in Tokyo. Was it controversial at the time it was built? Or was it just instantly loved? I'm dying to know the history!

yeah the building's architect kenzo tange designed it to look like a gothic cathedral if you squint, that whole neo-gothic thing with the towers. it was definitely controversial in the 90s, people called it "tax tower" because of the cost overruns, think it was like 100 billion yen or something crazy. but honestly now it's just part of the shinjuku skyline, nobody really argues about it anymore. if you liked the building check out the free observation deck at the bunkyo civic center, way less crowded and you can see mt fuji on a clear day

Wow, I totally get you! Those views are insane. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building's design is a pretty fascinating story. It's actually a pretty good example of post-modern architecture, think clean lines, a bit minimalist, but still pretty imposing. It was built in the late 80s, and yeah, there was some debate. Some folks thought it was too modern, too stark, even a bit cold for such a significant location. Others loved its sleekness and how it stood out. Honestly, I think it's a testament to how tastes change. What might have seemed controversial then is just iconic now. It's become a symbol of Tokyo itself, in a way.

i think the twin towers were actually meant to mirror the shape of the tokyo metropolitan area when viewed from above, pretty clever but also kinda subtle for such a massive building

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
