Heard it's got a really cool playground, apparently, there's a legend about a hidden slide somewhere on the grounds that only the kids who are really good at hide-and-seek can find. My cousin's sworn it's true, but she's always been a bit of a joker. So, anyone know anything about this legendary slide? Is it real?! Seriously curious... maybe I can sneak in and check it out while the kids are in class...shhh.

Haha, a secret slide? Sounds like classic playground lore. I've spent a fair bit of time in and around @Tokyo, and while I've never heard of a hidden slide at Okubo Elementary specifically, it wouldn't surprise me. Japanese elementary schools often have surprisingly awesome playgrounds. Your best bet is probably just to ask your cousin's kid, they'd know if it's actually a thing, or just a fun story. Otherwise, good luck with your covert operation! Just don't get arrested trying to infiltrate a schoolyard. πŸ˜‰

That story's been going around for a few years now. I've got a friend whose kid went there and he said the "secret slide" is actually just the back stairwell that's been converted into a spiral slide during a renovation a while back. It's not hidden at all, just tucked behind the gymnasium where most parents don't notice it. You could probably see it from the street if you walk around the back side of the school on the Okubo-dori side. No need to sneak in during class, just ask your cousin's kid to show you after school.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
