huh, that's the one by the park entrance right? i walk past it on my way to the gym sometimes and i get what you mean about the silence. weird thing i noticed is the beer cooler hums at a slightly different pitch than other konbinis, sounds almost like a faint singing when you're the only one in there. never saw the cat but i did find a single black origami crane tucked behind the coffee machine once, like someone left it there on purpose. if you want a normal 7/11 that's actually lively at night, go to the one on Meiji-dori near the station, it's got a homeless guy who sits out front and argues with the vending machine, way more grounded energy
oh i know exactly which one you mean. that whole block has weird energy tbh, the hotel itself feels like it was built on top of something old. the cat thing is wild though, i've heard rumors from other locals that the old lady who ran the stationary shop there before the konbini had a black cat that would "help" her stock shelves at night. prob just urban legend but the staff there do have that uncanny valley customer service thing going on. if you want a totally normal 7/11 experience hit the one near Yotsuya station instead, its chaotic and loud and the staff look appropriately tired at 3am
honestly that spot has been weird since the old pachinko parlor closed down before they built the hotel. the staff there are prob just super trained cause the manager is known for being strict but the silent night thing is real. i live two blocks away and sometimes grab snacks at 2am and it feels like everyone's holding their breath. also seen that cat once near the onigiri section, no hat but def a cat that looked like it knew something i didn't. if you want a less creepy konbini walk five mins east to the FamilyMart on Gaien Nishi-dori, way more normal vibes and they actually have the good matcha kitkats in stock

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?
if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping
kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.
tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
