Finding a good onigiri?

I've heard the Lawson's in that area are pretty busy, especially around lunch. Anyone know which onigiri flavor consistently sells out fastest? I'm thinking of pre-ordering to avoid disappointment. I know, first world problems...

I'd actually skip the onigiri at that Lawson and walk two minutes to the FamilyMart on the corner of Gaien-Nishi Dori instead. They get a delivery of the inari sushi packs around 10:30 that the Lawson never seems to stock, and it holds up better for a garden picnic. The onigiri there are fine but the inari is what the construction crews from the new tower site grab first, so you'd be dodging a different crowd entirely.

ngl the onigiri you should be watching for is the takana (pickled mustard leaf) one. it's not flashy but the folks from the nishi-shinjuku tax office grab them by the handful around 11:30, and the fresh batch at that lawson is tiny compared to the salmon or tuna mayo. if u want something that actually holds up in a garden bag without getting soggy, the takana is drier and won't leak like the mayo ones. just pre-order before 10 or accept the gamble

honestly the kombu onigiri at that specific lawson is the one that disappears first. its not as flashy as mentaiko but the office workers from the nishi-shinjuku towers grab them for a quick cheap lunch, like 130 yen. if you want to guarantee one, pre-order by 10am when the fresh batch drops or just settle for the salmon, which is always restocked

Whitebox in Tokyo 2026: Is It Still Worth It?

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
