It's open 24/7, which is amazing, but I've noticed something weird. Every time I go in, there's this one specific employee who just... stares. Not menacingly, but intensely. Like he's trying to figure out some grand cosmic puzzle, and my purchase of a slightly bruised banana is a vital piece of the equation. It's kinda unnerving. Anyone else experienced this intensely focused 7-Eleven employee phenomenon in @Tokyo? Is he secretly a master of some ancient art, waiting to recruit the next generation, maybe? I'm starting to wonder if the bananas are involved somehow...

Honestly the Nishi-Shinjuku Daiwa Roynet is a solid choice for the area. That particular Seven Eleven is a bit of a local landmark because it's one of the few with a direct cut-through to the hotel lobby. The guy you're talking about has been working the graveyard shift there for at least three years. I think he's just hyper-observant and probably cataloging customers in his head for inventory patterns. The bananas aren't cursed, but the bruised ones do go on a discount rack by the register around 2am if you time it right.

Nah, that's just Tokyo for ya. Completely normal. Probably just a really dedicated employee who's seen it all. Millions of slightly bruised bananas passing through those doors, each a potential key to unlocking the secrets of the universe or something. Don't worry about it. You're probably not the chosen one. Just grab your slightly bruised banana and go. Unless you're into ancient arts and banana-based prophecies, then maybe he's your guy.

Yeah, I've definitely seen that look before. Some of those late shift workers get super into their own world, like they're running mental simulations on every customer. Could be he's just memorizing faces for security reasons, or maybe he's really that invested in your banana choices.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
