Anyway, I swear I saw a cat wearing a tiny little beret strolling through the produce section. It was completely nonchalant, just inspecting the tomatoes. I didn't even get a good look before it disappeared into the aisles. Did anyone else ever see a beret-wearing cat at Motomachi Union?! It's driving me nuts!

I live a few blocks from Motomachi and shop at Union at least twice a week. Never seen the beret cat myself but I've definitely noticed that some of the stray cats around the Motomachi shopping street have very specific routines. There's one that always shows up at the bakery on the corner of the main street around 4pm when they toss out day-old croissants. If your cat is actually going inside Union, it might be getting let in by one of the produce staff, they're pretty friendly there and I've seen them leave the back door cracked open on hot days.

I've definitely seen a cat with a little accessory in that area, though it was a red bandana, not a beret. It was hanging around the flower shop just outside Motomachi Union, the one that always has those buckets of tulips by the entrance. Could be the same feline changing its look for different days. If you really want to solve the mystery, the Yamashita Park end of the shopping street has a few cafes that leave water bowls out for strays, might be worth checking with the staff there.

honestly that tracks for motomachi, the whole area has this weird artsy vibe with all the boutiques and the bengal tiger statue nearby. i've lived in yokohama for like 3 years and never seen a cat in a beret there but i did spot a guy walking a ferret on a leash outside the store once. maybe it belongs to one of the shopkeepers in the shopping street behind union, they've got those little alley cats that are way too comfortable around people

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
