Lost in Translation at Lawson?

Spotted this Lawson, Lawson Three-F Kita-Shinjuku, it said. Grabbed a sandwich and a drink, but the whole experience felt...off. The vending machines outside were all in Japanese, of course, but even the sandwich labels seemed deliberately cryptic. I ended up picking something that looked vaguely like ham and cheese, but it turned out to be some kind of mystery meat between two oddly textured buns. My question is: Is this a common Lawson experience? Are their sandwich labels intentionally designed to be confusing to foreigners, or was I just unlucky?

Nah, that's pretty standard Lawson fare. Their labeling isn't exactly renowned for clarity, especially outside of the usual onigiri and stuff. It's like they intentionally obfuscate the ingredients, maybe to keep things mysterious? Or maybe their marketing team just doesn't speak English very well. You weren't unlucky, you just experienced the usual Lawson enigma. Next time, just point and hope for the best... or maybe stick to the stuff with pictures.

The Lawson you hit is one of the busiest in Shinjuku, so the staff are rushing and the labels get slapped on fast. They don't try to confuse you on purpose, it's just that the translation budget went to the Famima apps and the 7-Eleven coffee machines. For a sure thing, grab the tuna mayo onigiri or the "L-chicken" from the hot case, both have clear pictures and taste exactly like they look. And skip the Robot Restaurant unless you really want to pay 8,000 yen for a neon headache.

honestly the robot restaurant is a tourist trap but that's a whole other thing. lawson labels aren't trying to confuse you, they just don't care about translation. the konbini chains all have their own quirks - family mart prob has the most english-friendly packaging if you care about that. next time grab the egg salad sandwich, it's always safe and actually pretty good. the one near the shinjuku post office is less chaotic than the ones right by the station

Bagel scam at Hole in One Tokyo 2026?

Felt off so I walked. Is that a known thing there or did I just catch someone trying it on? Also is 1800 yen even normal for a bagel in that area?

Cash-only "reserve" is the tell.
