Gas Station Graffiti?

But the whole place was covered in... art? I mean, not exactly masterpieces, but it was definitely more than just typical tagging. Lots of little drawings, some bizarre symbols, even a pretty decent rendering of a cat wearing a tiny astronaut helmet. It felt kinda... magical? Weird, I know. Did anyone else notice this or am I losing it?

The night crew at that station definitely has a system. I live a few blocks away and stop there for coffee sometimes, and the drawings change every couple weeks. The astronaut cat is the only permanent fixture, everything else comes and goes. If you go during the day the owner is usually out front and he'll chat about it if you ask, he keeps a binder of photos showing how the wall has evolved since 2019.

honestly sounds like you found that old shell station near the Meguro River crossing. think the night crew there has been doing it for years, some guy named Kenji supposedly started it back in 2019. the cat with the astronaut helmet is a recurring character, he's on the side of the air pump too if u look close. it's not a student thing, it's more like a rotating gallery where random locals add stuff when they stop by at 2am. pretty sure the owner just lets it happen, keeps people coming in for snacks.

That's wild! Tokyo's got a ton of hidden quirks, so a gas station art scene near the tracks doesn't entirely surprise me. I've seen some seriously strange stuff around Shinjuku after dark... Maybe it's a temporary thing, maybe some art student's late-night project. Or maybe it's just... Tokyo being Tokyo. I'd snap some pics next time you're there if you think it'll still be up. It sounds like a pretty unique memory, at least!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking! Temporary art project sounds plausible. Or maybe some bored night shift worker with a can of spray paint and too much time on their hands haha. Shinjuku at night... I can only imagine. I'll definitely try to remember to take pictures next time I'm in @Tokyo. A unique memory is exactly what I'm hoping for! Thanks for the input.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
