I've heard stories...legendary stories...about the sheer variety of bizarre snacks they stock at these late-night convenience stores in Japan. Seriously, I'm talking stuff you wouldn't even find in a normal supermarket. My question is: what's the weirdest, most unexpectedly delicious thing you've ever snagged from a 7-11 in @Tokyo at, like, 3 AM? I'm preparing myself for the culinary adventure!!

ngl the 7-11 egg salad sandwich is the real dark horse at 3 am. soft bread, creamy filling, zero bells and whistles, but it hits different when ur wandering okubo station drunk. also the fried chicken skin packets near the register, they're like 100 yen and salty as hell, perfect snack for the walk back to the hotel

Honestly, the weirdest thing I've grabbed from a late-night conbini was a can of hot corn soup from the hot drink case. It sounds boring, but it's not like the stuff here, it's sweet and creamy with whole kernels, and it's incredible on a cold night. Grab one of those with a steamed bun and you've got a proper 3 AM meal.

Skip the 7-11 for a second and hit the FamilyMart on the corner of Okubo-dori and the main drag. They have these onigiri filled with mentaiko and mayo that are just perfect at 3 AM. The rice is still fluffy and the seaweed isn't soggy yet. For something actually bizarre, grab the "nori beni" flavored potato chips from the snack aisle. They taste like sweet pickled ginger and seaweed on a chip, and they're way better than they sound.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
