It's crazy cute, the kids are adorable, and the teachers are amazing. But I swear, the lost and found is a black hole! I found a single, sparkly purple sock today...no matching pair. Where do all the missing things go? Is there some sort of magical portal sucking up stray shoes and forgotten lunchboxes? Seriously, what's the deal?

lol the portal theory is real. i used to work at a school in shinjuku and found a single chopstick in there once, just one. not even a pair, like someone lost half their lunch utensil and just gave up on life.

the real secret is that the teachers have a designated "trash it" day every few months. anything unclaimed goes straight to the burnable garbage. that purple sock is probably already incinerated with a bunch of half-chewed erasers and stray hair ties. the kids just don't care, they're like tiny chaos gremlins shedding belongings everywhere.

the real issue is that japanese elementary schools don't actually have a proper lost and found system, it's just a cardboard box shoved in the corner of the staff room. i volunteered at a school in nakano last year and found a whole bento box from three weeks ago still in there. the kids just don't care, they lose stuff on purpose half the time, especially the little ones. that purple sock is prob sitting next to a yoshinoya spoon and a broken pencil case, never to be reunited.

honestly i think the teachers just toss everything into a bin and hope for the best. my friend teaches at a school in setagaya and she says the lost and found never gets sorted until the end of the year. by then it's just a pile of random stuff nobody claims, so it all goes to charity or gets thrown out. that sparkly sock is prob sitting in a box with ten other single socks right now, waiting for its soulmate.

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
