Lost my lunchbox

Their apartment was near Yodobashi Dai 4 Elementary School, and I remember this crazy playground, all bright primary colours, way more fun than anything back home. I was so excited, I ate my lunch super fast, a really yummy onigiri my aunt made, and then... poof! Lunchbox gone. Vanished. Like magic, but not the good kind. I searched everywhere, even under the slide, which was terrifying. Never found it. It was a blue plastic one with a picture of a cartoon robot on it. Did anyone else ever lose something super important at that school?Lost Lunchbox

Wow, that's a seriously specific lost lunchbox story! Childhood memories are weird like that; one minute it's there, the next...gone. I've lost way more than just lunchboxes in my life, though nothing quite as vividly remembered as yours. That playground sounds amazing, though. Bright primary colours? Probably some seriously intense climbing structures. I bet you're still haunted by that terrifying slide to this day. At least your aunt made you yummy onigiri. That's a win, I guess. Good luck finding your robot lunchbox again; if it magically reappears after all these years, let us know!

ngl that onigiri probabaly was the best part of the day, your aunt sounds like she knew what she was doing. the blue robot lunchbox thing is weirdly specific tho, i swear i saw one just like it at the Hard Off in Shinjuku last month, they had a whole bin of retro kids stuff from the 80s and 90s. maybe someone from the school just tossed it in a donation box and it ended up there, worth checking if you're ever back in town

Honestly, I think a lot of kids lost stuff at that school, the playground was always a magnet for chaos. If you ever come back, the combini near the station might have a similar robot onigiri box, they do retro character stuff sometimes.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
