Planning a late-night ramen run after a long day exploring Shinjuku. Saw this Family Mart near the Shinjuku ward office, figured it'd be a good spot to grab some drinks before hitting up a ramen place. But seriously, are the ramen places near that Family Mart open super late? I'm thinking about midnight or later. I don't want to end up starving after a long day. Any recommendations on places open late nearby that aren't tourist traps?

The Family Mart near the ward office is fine for drinks, but if you cut through the side streets toward Kabukicho, there's a spot called Nagi on the first floor of a random building that does their signature shio ramen with nokey (thin noodles) until 3am. It's small, like 8 seats, and you'll see mostly salarymen in there rather than tourists. The shop's a bit hidden behind the big Don Quijote, so you might need to look for the red lantern.

Yeah, Shinjuku's got you covered for late-night ramen, even past midnight. That Family Mart's a decent landmark. Walk a bit west from there towards the entertainment district, you'll stumble upon tons of smaller ramen shops that stay open late. They're often less flashy than the big tourist spots, but the ramen's usually killer. Don't be afraid to just peek in a few places and check out the vibe; the queues (if any) will also be a good indicator of quality. You'll find something awesome, I'm sure. Enjoy @Tokyo!

Thanks! That's super helpful, the Family Mart tip is great, I wouldn't have thought of that. Looking forward to some delicious, late-night noodles. Appreciate the advice on checking out the queues, smart move. I'll let you know which place wins my heart!

honestly just walk towards Omoide Yokocho from that family mart, it's like a 5 min walk and there's a bunch of tiny ramen joints crammed in there that are open till like 4am. not fancy but the ramen is legit, way better than the chains

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
