This Nishishinjukuhachi Post Office, is it as crazy busy as everyone says? I've heard stories about lines stretching around the block and super-efficient staff. Is it worth the hassle, or should I just use a private courier? I'm sending fragile pottery, so speed and care are key. Someone told me they once saw a cat sorting mail... is that true?!

the yamato transport option is solid, but honestly if you're already near the station check out the Kuroneko Yamato counter inside the Odakyu Department Store basement. way less crowded than the post office and they have this premium fragile service that includes photo documentation of the packing process. costs about 800 yen more but i've sent sake bottles and plates through them no issues. the post office cat story is def just someone's fever dream but the shiba inu mailman is real and he's usually there around 3pm on weekdays if you wanna see something actually weird

I'd skip the post office for pottery. There's a Yamato Transport office on the corner of Meiji-dori and Gaien-nishi-dori that specializes in fragile items, they pack it themselves for about 300 yen extra. I've sent two ceramic sets through them without a scratch. The post office is fine for letters but their handling of parcels is just okay.

fwiw I live like 5 mins from that post office and it's not as bad as people make it sound. sure lunch rush and right before closing are chaos but if you go around 10am or 2pm it's pretty chill. the staff are actually super careful with fragile stuff in my experience, they have those bubble wrap stations right there and will double box it for you if you ask. as for the cat thing lmao no but there's this old guy who delivers mail on a bike with his shiba inu in the basket, that's prob what someone misremembered

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
