The staff spoke almost no English, and my Japanese is, uh, less than stellar. I ended up resorting to frantic miming and pointing, a surprisingly effective communication method. It was more stressful than it should have been, but somehow the package made it. Anyone else have hilarious postal mishaps in @Japan?

living in nakameguro and the local post office staff are honestly saints. the older lady there has a little notebook where she writes down the address for me in japanese if i show her the english one on my phone. she also taught me that if you fold the customs form into thirds and tape it to the back instead of the front it goes through customs faster. no idea if that's true but i do it every time now

honestly the real hack is just using the self service counters at the big post offices. the one in tokyo station has them on the basement floor with full english menus, you weigh it yourself, print the label, pay by card. no human interaction required. i only learned this after doing the bird flapping routine at ueno post office for like 15 minutes trying to explain i wanted surface mail. felt like a fool when i saw the kiosk later that day

the yotsuya post office has an english form you can fill out on the ipad at the counter, saved me when i had to mail a bike chain back to australia. also pro tip if you're in shinjuku the main post office near the station has a dedicated international counter with a guy who speaks okay english, just go upstairs to the second floor

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
