Tokyo Shinagawa Hospital Emergency Room Nightmare?

The staff were amazing, seriously, super efficient and spoke great English, which was a huge relief. But getting a cab afterwards was a total cluster... they just kept driving past, I think they were avoiding the hospital? What's the best way to get a taxi from there late at night without waiting an hour??

tbh the cab thing is a known issue around hospitals here, drivers get superstitious about picking up near emergency rooms late night. if you're mobile enough, walk a block or two away from the main entrance towards the konbini on the corner, cabs stop there way more often. also the taxi stand at shinagawa station's east exit is only like a 10 minute slow limp, and there's usually a line of cabs waiting even after midnight

Use the hospital's official app, if they have one. Many hospitals in @Tokyo have ride-hailing services integrated directly into their systems, you can order a cab or a ride-share straight from your phone without even leaving the building. Failing that, try calling a taxi company directly instead of relying on street hails at that hour. It's probably a more reliable option late at night around a busy hospital. Also, Shinagawa station's not that far away, if you can manage it, a short walk might get you more taxi options.

Yeah, good points. I didn't even think about the app, completely overlooked that. The walk to the station sounds rough though, especially after... you know. I'll definitely try the app first, then the taxi company if that doesn't work. Thanks for the tips!

The walk to the konbini is a solid move, but if you're on crutches or just not up for it, try the JapanTaxi app. It's what most people use here, and you can set your pickup spot to the 7-Eleven about 100 meters down the road on the other side of the overpass. Drivers will actually accept that, and it usually takes under 10 minutes at night. Just don't try to flag one down right at the hospital entrance, that's a lost cause after 10.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
