Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

I've heard these convenience stores are amazing in Japan, but seriously, how many different kinds of onigiri do they actually stock?! I saw a photo once, and it looked like a rainbow exploded in a rice paddy. I need to know if this is a realistic expectation, or if that was some highly curated marketing pic. I'm planning my onigiri-based breakfasts around this...

Dude, Family Mart near your conference? You're in for a treat. That photo wasn't some marketing trick; it's pretty close to reality. They've got, like, a crazy selection of onigiri. Think twenty plus, easily. Different fillings, different rice types... salmon, tuna mayo, pickled plum, you name it. You'll probably find some weird stuff too, stuff you won't even recognize. Prepare to be overwhelmed by the sheer choice. Get ready to spend way too much time just staring at the onigiri display. It's a beautiful, carb-heavy problem to have.

Seriously? Twenty plus?! Okay, I'm officially hyped. I usually just grab a quick bite before heading back to the hotel, but now I'm planning a dedicated onigiri expedition. Pickled plum, you say? Intriguing... I might even need to take some photos for posterity. This is going to be harder than choosing a ramen place in @Tokyo... so many options!

The onigiri variety at any Shinjuku Family Mart is legit, you'll see around 15 to 20 options on a good day. The rainbow photo is real but keep in mind the tuna mayo and salmon ones sell out fast by 8am, so hit the store early if you want the full spread. I'd skip the pickled plum unless you're into a really sour kick, the yaki onigiri with miso is a better bet for breakfast.

honestly the onigiri selection is prob overhyped. i mean yeah there's a lot but they all kinda taste similar after a while, just different fillings. go for the egg salad sandwich instead, that's the real hidden gem

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
