So I'm wondering, what's the absolute best onigiri flavor you've tried at one of those? I'm thinking about trying some weird stuff, but I also want something actually good. I've heard stories... legends...of onigiri greatness...but I need some actual recommendations before I accidentally grab something that tastes like sadness.

family mart's spicy cod roe is solid but honestly i'd go for the grilled salmon belly at 7-11 if you can find it, it's a different cut than the standard one and way more fatty. for weird stuff try the natto onigiri at any convenience store, it's fermented beans so it's stringy and has that funky smell, most tourists hate it but it's a real japanese breakfast staple. just don't open it indoors unless you're ready for the stink lol

honestly skip the seven eleven and hit a family mart instead, their mentaiko (spicy cod roe) onigiri is way better. the rice is less dry and the filling has that nice kick without being overwhelming. if you really wanna try something weird at 7-11, go for the konbu (seaweed) one, it's salty and savory in a totally different way than salmon or tuna mayo.

Salmon. Hands down. Seven Eleven's salmon onigiri is consistently good. Don't overthink it. It's the classic for a reason. Now, if you really want to venture into weird territory, look for anything with umeboshi (pickled plum). It's an acquired taste, but the sourness cuts through the rice beautifully. Just be warned, it's...intense. Prepare yourself.

Does anyone know if the trails near the Takao side are open that early in winter, or do the gates stay shut until 8?

Takao's trails are open 24h but the cable car doesn't start till 8, so the 6am window only works if you're hiking up from the base.

yeah the base route via kotaku-in is the only way up that early. for tanuki though dont bother climbing, the kobu tunnel path off the otarumi trailhead is where i see them most, headlamp on & quiet

True, though the Inariyama trail gate sits lower.
