Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

More food options than I've seen in any supermarket back home. I spent half an hour just looking at the onigiri selection. Crazy. But here's the thing: they have these vending machines inside the store that have things you can't even find on the shelves. It's like a vending machine labyrinth. My question is: What's the deal with the secret vending machines? Are they stocking limited edition stuff, or is it just random, extra stock? Someone needs to crack this code.

the shinjuku odakyu halc 7-eleven has a machine that stocks the 7premium gold series stuff that's usually only sold at their bigger stores out in saitama. i found a bottle of yuzu honey sake there that was supposed to be a region exclusive. the trick is checking around 3pm when the afternoon delivery comes in, that's when they rotate the machine with whatever the warehouse sent over by mistake. sometimes you get lucky with a mislabeled shipment

honestly the secret vending machines are where they stash the weird collab stuff and regional exclusives that'd confuse tourists on the shelves. like i found a kitkat flavor there that wasn't even listed on nestle's japan site once. the real trick is checking the machine near the back by the drink fridges, that one usually has the most random stuff because it's the overflow from their online orders.

ngl you're overthinking it a bit, the in-store machines are just how they handle the sheer volume of stuff here. the one near the exit in shinjuku's bigger 7-elevens usually has the ice cream that's half melted from the back of the freezer, i've gotten lucky with matcha mochi pops that were like 50 yen off. but the real gem is the hot food machine by the register, they'll stock the curry pan and croquettes that aren't even on the shelf menu yet, just rotating whatever's fresh that morning

Best aquarium in Tokyo 2026: Ocean Center worth it?

Any recs for a clinic near Shinagawa that takes national health insurance, and what a walk-in visit usually runs? Also, is the aquarium actually worth the ticket price in 2026 or should we just do Sunshine Aquarium instead?

Sunshine Aquarium is the better rainy-day pick with kids, and Maxell Aqua Park handles strollers easier than Ocean Center's ramps.

yeah the ramps there are rough with a stroller

For the back, try a seikotsuin instead of a clinic, they take insurance and walk-ins run about 1,500 yen.

Ocean Center's penguin and jellyfish halls justify the price, but weekend seikotsuin slots fill fast so call ahead.
