Is this place haunted?

Seriously quiet, like everyone was holding their breath. One of the tellers kept glancing at the clock, almost nervously. And the air conditioning was way too cold. I swear I saw a shadow flit across the hallway by the loan applications desk, but I just chalked it up to stress. Anyone else get that vibe? Or am I just crazy?

ngl the shinjuku branch office vibe is kinda infamous among local bank workers i know. my friend used to temp there and said the basement records room is way creepier than the main floor, always has that stale cold air even in august. there's actually an old well sealed under the building from the pre-war era, some of the older staff might mention it if you ask the right person. might be worth going during lunch rush when it's busier if you need to go back

The Tokyo Credit Association building on the Shinjuku side isn't ancient by any means, but it sits on land that used to be part of a much older neighborhood before the post-war rebuild. There are a few small shrines tucked between the office blocks nearby that people still maintain, which can be a clue that the area has some history. The AC being too cold is a classic sign of a jibakurei, a type of earth-bound spirit that gets attached to a specific location and drains warmth from the air. If you go back, try stopping by the Shinjuku Gyoen park after, the open space and sunlight can help shake off that lingering feeling.

fwiw the shinjuku gyoen suggestion is solid, that park has a weirdly cleansing energy. but if you really want to test if it's haunted, go on a sunday when the branch is closed and just stand outside for a few minutes. the vibe shift between open and closed hours can tell you a lot about whether it's the building or the people inside making it feel off. my friend who works in commercial real estate says banks are some of the most haunted buildings in tokyo because of all the money stress and desperation soaked into the walls over decades.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
