This Family Mart was a lifesaver, honestly. The sheer variety of onigiri alone was overwhelming, salmon, tuna mayo, even some weird seaweed thing I didn't even try. But the real question is: did I make the right choice? My gut says no. I shoulda gone with the salmon. Next time (and there WILL be a next time, because convenience stores in Japan are amazing), I need to know which onigiri is the best onigiri. What's the local favorite?

yeah if you want the real local move grab the inari from 7-Eleven, it's not technically onigiri but it's rice in a sweet tofu pouch, super filling and the soy flavor is nice at 3am. like 110 yen and they're always in the cold case next to the triangle ones

Skip the convenience store stuff for a minute and hit up a 7-Eleven. Their in-store kitchen makes fresh onigiri throughout the day, so you get that slightly warm, just-pressed rice texture. I'd grab the kombu (kelp) one, it's savory and a little sweet, way more interesting than plain salmon. It's about 130 yen and they restock around 4 AM, so perfect for your jet lag.

imo the real move at 3am isnt even onigiri, its the egg sando from Family Mart. but if youre locked in on the rice triangle, look for the ones with a little sticker that says honten on them. thats the line where they press it fresh in the back, not the pre-packed stuff from a factory. the rice is noticeably fluffier and the nori comes separate so it stays crunchy. the konbini near Shibuya Scramble, the one by the Hachiko exit, usually has a decent selection even late

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
