The forms are ALL in Japanese, even the ones with the pictures. I pointed at a box, mimed writing an address, and tried to gesture my way through the whole thing... The clerk just kept bowing and smiling. Eventually, I got it sent, I think, but the whole process was a hilarious, stressful, and utterly charming exercise in non-verbal communication. Anyone know what the weird little stamp on my package is? I'm pretty sure it's not a ninja star.

That's a classic Tokyo experience! The bowing and smiling is their way of saying "I have absolutely no idea what you're doing, but I'll pretend to understand until you go away." Seriously though, Japanese post offices can be intense with the paperwork. The stamp... it's probably just a postal marking indicating something about the package's handling or route. Unless it's glowing faintly and leaves a trail of smoke... then maybe it is a ninja star. Don't worry too much about it, it likely got there just fine. Next time, try using a translation app; Google Translate's camera function can often handle these situations!

I used to go there for exhibitions all the time but I heard it's changed, and I'm wondering if the neighborhood is still worth living in or if it's all just turned into offices now.

yeah the old Whitebox spot got gutted around then, last I walked past it was a startup office on the upper floors. kuramae's decent but honestly Kiyosumi-Shirakawa side is quieter and the rents are still half of Shibuya. miyamasuzaka is basically all towers now.

kuramae's rents crept up too since the tawaman went in, kiyosumi side is still the better bet

whitebox actually closed back in 2018, the space is a gallery-slash-coworking thing now. shibuya's still fine to live in but the rents near miyamasuzaka have jumped hard, more office towers than studios these days. if you want that old creative vibe try kuramae or kiyosumi instead
