Lost in Translation?

It's in a pretty residential area, and honestly, the Google Maps street view isn't exactly helpful. My question is: what's the best way to get there using public transport from @Tokyo's Shinjuku station? I'm worried about getting lost, especially with all the little side streets. I'd hate to be late and miss seeing little Taro graduate. Plus, finding parking around kindergartens seems... impossible, even with my tiny car.

You've got plenty of route advice already, so let me add something practical: check the kindergarten's name on Google Maps and switch to the Japanese version by tapping the language toggle. The English listing often has the wrong pin location, but the Japanese one shows the actual gate, which can be a small door between houses that Street View misses entirely.

For the last stretch, ignore the phone and look for the 祝卒園 banners or flower arrangements, every kindergarten puts those out front on ceremony day. If you're still unsure, any parent carrying a camera or a wrapped gift is going the same way, just fall in behind them.

One thing I'd add that nobody's mentioned: wear indoor shoes or slippers. Japanese kindergartens have a shoe locker at the entrance and you'll be expected to swap out, nobody will say anything if you forget, but you'll be the one standing awkwardly in socks while everyone else has their slippers. And if you're early, the convenience store across the street usually has a bench where parents gather, that's a good spot to wait without looking lost.

If you're coming from Shinjuku, the trick isn't the train line, it's the station exit. Most kindergartens in that area are a 10-15 minute walk from either Yotsuya or Nakano-sakaue, so check which one your friend's place is closer to. Once you're above ground, ignore the phone map and look for the 通学帽, the little yellow or white caps the kids wear, you'll see a few of them walking with parents around 8:30 if the ceremony starts at 9.

For the car, I'd actually say don't completely rule it out if you're coming from far. There are small コインパーキング lots tucked behind convenience stores, but you need to arrive by 8 AM at the latest, and even then you might circle a bit. The real pro move is to ask the kindergarten itself if they have a designated drop-off spot for parents, a lot of them do a temporary curb stop for the ceremony, and they'll tell you over the phone in English if you ask for the 事務所.

One thing nobody's mentioned: buy a return ticket at Shinjuku before you board. The machines at residential stations only take IC cards or exact change, and if you're fumbling for coins while in a rush, that's how you miss the ceremony. Also, the east exit of Shinjuku is a maze, so if you're taking the Ch

honestly hyperdia is solid but for a kindergarten ceremony i'd just get the address into japan travel by navitime, it's better with the actual building names and exits. the real trick is figuring out which shinjuku exit to use, east exit is usually the chaos central, but if the kindergarten is in a residential zone you're probably going towards yotsuya or nakano area. once you're off the train, follow the kids with the backpacks, they'll lead you straight there, no joke. parking is a nightmare so yeah, leave the car, but if u must, check for a coin parking a block or two away, they're everywhere but fill up fast on weekday mornings. worst case, ask a convenience store clerk, they know the neighborhood better than any map.

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
