I've heard legends... whispers... of a 24/7 convenience store that stocks the most bizarre and delicious midnight snacks imaginable. Is this the place? I'm talking seriously obscure stuff, not just onigiri. Anyone know if the rumors are true? What's the weirdest thing you've ever found there at 3 AM?

the daily yamazaki is solid but honestly the real weird stuff is at don quijote on the yasukuni-dori side. it's open 24h and they have a whole aisle of bizarre snacks like wasabi kit kats or mentaiko flavored chips that actually taste like fish roe. i grabbed a can of "black" ramune there once that was supposed to be charcoal flavored, tasted like weird soda water with a hint of ash. not great but definitely memorable

You're looking for a specific 24/7 konbini with the weird stuff, and there is one that kind of fits the bill. It's the Daily Yamazaki on the west side of the station, near the Odakyu Line entrance. They have a bigger selection of the oddball drinks and packaged goods than the standard 7-Eleven, like canned corn potage soup that's actually pretty good and those sour gummy candies that come in flavors like "Cola" but are way stronger than they should be. The weirdest thing I grabbed at 3 AM was a can of "hot" coffee that had a little pull-tab to activate a chemical heating element, which felt like a science experiment at that hour.

Shinjuku's got some late-night options, that's for sure. Forget the whispers of a single magical 7-Eleven though, it's more like a whole ecosystem of weirdness. You'll find plenty of 24/7 konbini (convenience stores) around Shinjuku Station, but the real fun's in exploring a bit. Wander down some side streets; you'll stumble across tiny ramen shops spilling out steam, yakitori stands sizzling away, and maybe even a place selling things you can't even begin to name, let alone pronounce. The weirdest thing I ever found at 3 AM? Probably those pickled plums marinated in something suspiciously like rocket fuel. Seriously, they glow in the dark. Just kidding...mostly. But yeah, you won't be disappointed.

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
