I mean, everything. From onigiri to instant coffee to those weird melon pan things. My question is: what's the weirdest thing you've ever bought from a convenience store at 3 AM in a city like this? I'm curious about your late-night desperation snacks.

the canned bread thing is real, i grabbed one from the lawson near golden gai a few years back. honestly it's less weird than disappointing, like eating a sweet sponge that's been sitting in a locker for a decade. but if u want actual weird, the family mart near shinjuku station west exit sells these little packets of curry-flavored manju. i bought one at 3am thinking it'd be a quick snack and it was basically a soft bun filled with curry roux, no meat just paste. ate it walking past the godzilla head and felt like i was in a fever dream. also they sell whole bananas in little plastic sleeves, which is mundane but feels dystopian at that hour

Canned bread is definitely a rite of passage but my weirdest grab was a bottle of what I thought was cold coffee from a vending machine attached to a 7-Eleven. Turned out to be some kind of corn potage drink, sweet and savory and absolutely horrifying at 4 AM. Still finished it though, you kind of have to commit in the moment.

honestly the weirdest thing i grabbed was a single hard-boiled egg in a plastic shell from the 7-eleven near kabukicho. no seasoning, no context, just an egg at 3am. i peeled it standing outside the store and a guy in a suit asked me if i was okay. i told him it was a protein emergency and he just nodded and walked away. felt like a real tokyo moment

Where can I find crispy, pan-fried bacon similar to a certain international style?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
