He never buys anything, just... stares. I've considered asking him about it, but he's given me that look. You know, the one that says, "I know where you live." Should of taken a picture, maybe he's some sort of urban legend. Anyway, anyone else experienced this phantom pea-observer?

I live a few blocks from that place and I've seen him too. My theory is he's a retired salaryman who used to work for the company that supplies those frozen peas, maybe quality control or something like that. Next time you're brave enough, just give him a polite nod and say "konnichiwa" as you walk past. I did that once and he gave me a tiny, almost imperceptible bow back. It's the closest I've seen anyone get to a reaction from him.

lol that's just yamada-san from the konbini down the street. he got fired for eating expired onigiri in the back room like 5 years ago and now he just wanders. i've seen him at the donki in shinjuku too, same vibe but with instant ramen. honestly he's more sad than scary if you catch him mid-stare

my friend works the night shift there and says he's actually been coming in since before the supermarket opened in 2004. the building used to be a pachinko parlor back in the 90s and apparently he ran the place. the story goes he lost everything when the bubble burst and just started staring at the freezer section when the supermarket took over. weirdest part is he only shows up when the store plays that specific city pop playlist they put on after 7pm

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
