Lost in Translation?

I'm trying to buy a simple onigiri, but the vending machine-style payment system is mocking me. Seriously, it's like a choose-your-own-adventure game of impending hunger. Do they even HAVE English instructions somewhere, or am I destined to leave with nothing but a slightly bruised ego?

the trick is the big green button that says "おつり" (otsuri) which means change, but honestly just look for the touchscreen icon that looks like a little person with a speech bubble, that's the english button. most of the newer famima machines have it in the top right corner. if you're still stuck, just take the onigiri to the counter directly, they'll ring it up for you and you can pay cash there without touching the machine. the konbini clerks in shibuya see tourists do this all day so they won't even blink

Just take the onigiri to the counter. Half the time even locals skip the machine for single items, especially during rush hour when the line is long. The clerk will ring it up on their register and you can pay with cash or IC card directly. There's a Lawson near Harajuku station where the machine is broken half the time and everyone just does this.

if you're in a 7-eleven the machine actually has an english button, it's usually at the bottom left of the touchscreen and says "english" in tiny text. once you hit that it's pretty straightforward, you select the item category and it shows pictures. the onigiri are under "rice balls" or "omusubi" on most screens. worst case just take it to the counter and pay cash, the staff at the famima near shinjuku station are used to it and will just smile and process it for you

While the local bacon works well in many recipes, I specifically want the crispy type. Where might I find this style of bacon?

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
