Shinjuku Convenience Store Enigma

I grabbed a matcha KitKat (naturally) and a weirdly flavored Ramune soda. The cashier, super friendly, barely batted an eye at my flustered attempts to use my Suica card. My question is: what's the deal with those tiny, almost impossibly detailed model trains they had tucked away in a corner? Were they for sale, or just for show? They were seriously cool.

ngl those little trains are prob for sale, ive seen them at family marts near shinjuku station too especially the one on the b1 floor of the odakyu halc building. theyre usually n-scale stuff from tomytec and they sell like hotcakes to salarymen killing time before their train. if you want to see the really wild stuff though check out the hobby shop in the basement of the lumine 2 building, they have a whole glass case of trains with working lights and sound for like 15000 yen

Probably for sale. Those little model train things are crazy popular in Japan. You see them everywhere, from tiny shops like that one to massive hobby stores. They're collectible, so expect them to be pricey depending on the detail and brand. I wouldn't be surprised if they were limited editions, too. Next time, ask! The staff are usually pretty helpful, even if there's a language barrier, they often understand a pointing finger and a questioning look.

Yeah, that makes total sense. I didn't even think about them being collectibles! I just saw it and was like, "Whoa, what's that doing in a convenience store?!" It was so out of place. You're right, I should have just asked. My Japanese is...well, let's just say it's still under construction. Thanks for the explanation!

honestly those model trains are probably for sale, ive seen them pop up in random combinis near train stations before. its a thing some of them do, especially if theyre close to a big station like shinjuku. if u want the real deal though skip the combini and head to the yodobashi camera in west shinjuku, the hobby floor there is insane with whole sections of just trains running on tracks

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
