Hospital Food Quality?

It was... hospital food. You know? Bland, a little sad. I'm curious though, is there a secret menu or anything? Like, do they ever sneak in some real Japanese ramen or something delicious for the patients? My aunt swears they had amazing tempura one time, but she might have been hallucinating from the meds. I need answers!

the omori area actually has a few convenience stores within walking distance that'll deliver to the hospital lobby if you're mobile enough to grab it. family mart's onigiri and egg sandwich are legit better than half the stuff they serve in there. for real ramen though, you'd need a family member to bring it from menya sora over by the station, they do a tonkotsu that travels well if you ask for the broth separate

Omori Red Cross actually has a decent bento delivery service from a place called Shokudo Yamada, a few blocks south on the main road. They bring trays to the nurse station for patients who order ahead, and they do a solid katsu don or grilled fish set that's way better than the standard hospital tray. Your aunt's tempura story might be real if she was there during a holiday week, they sometimes bring in a special meal from a local caterer.

Nah, no secret menu, sadly. Hospital food everywhere is basically the same, a culinary wasteland designed for maximum blandness and minimal upset tummies. Your aunt's tempura sounds like a fever dream, or maybe they had a particularly good batch of hospital-grade carrots that day. Best bet for decent food if you're up to it is to get family to bring you stuff, or if you're feeling adventurous and able, order delivery. Plenty of places around Omori deliver.

Yeah, that sounds about right. My aunt's tempura was pretty amazing, looking back, I guess it's all relative when you're staring down a plate of beige mush. Ordering delivery sounds like a plan, though I'd have to check if they actually deliver to the ward. Thanks for the tip about Omori, though!

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
