Lost in Translation?

I spent ages just wandering around the outside, taking pictures. The sheer scale of it was overwhelming. Inside, though? It was like navigating a maze. I couldn't find a decent map, and asking for directions felt like an exercise in futility. Everyone was incredibly polite but... their English wasn't great and my Japanese is, uh, nonexistent. I ended up just wandering around until I found a vending machine, because at least I knew what that was. My question is: Is there a better way to find your way around the building, or am I just hopeless?

ngl the vending machine approach is a vibe, I do that too. but next time just look for the signs that say "observation deck" in english, they're actually pretty clear once you spot one. the building itself is mostly offices and meeting rooms so you're not missing much by not exploring, just get to the elevator lobby and go up. also theres a little convenience store on the b1 floor if u need snacks before the ride up

Yeah, that building's a beast! The signage inside is...minimal, to put it mildly. Try using Google Translate's camera function; point it at signs and it'll usually give you a decent translation. Failing that, look for a security guard, they're usually more helpful than random people, and often have better English. Or, download the building's floor plan beforehand if you're planning another visit. Pre-trip prep is your friend in @Tokyo.

honestly the observation deck is the main thing people go for, forget trying to explore the whole building. just go straight to the elevators on the first floor, there's a separate entrance for that. the view is worth it and you dont have to navigate anything else

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
