Rain was coming down sideways, and the place was practically deserted. I swear I saw a shadowy figure lurking near the vending machines...but when I looked again, nothing. Weirdest part? The pump wouldn't take my card, only cash. I didn't have any Japanese Yen on me, so I had to drive to the next station, miles away! Anyone else experienced anything odd at this place? Is it known for...glitches?

ngl you prob hit that one station in minato-ku near the tokyo tower, the one with the old school sign that flickers. that place has been cash-only after 10pm for years, think the owner just doesn't trust the card machines. the shadowy figure thing is just the security guard's coat hanging on a hook inside the booth, i thought the same thing my first time. if you're driving late again, just use the e-nexx stations along the shuto expressway, they take cards 24/7 and the pumps are covered so no rain drama

honestly depends which station you were at. there's a shell in shinjuku that's notorious for the card reader dying during rain, think it's some wiring issue not ghosts. if it was near gotanda or a random self-serve one in setagaya, those places are often cash-only after midnight anyway. next time just hit a 7-11 atm first, they're everywhere and work with foreign cards no problem.

could be the station near ikebukuro? there's one there that's notorious for the card reader just dying randomly, especially when it's wet. cash-only after midnight is pretty standard for some of the smaller places too, not really a glitch just annoying. if you're ever in that situation again, the family mart down the street usually has an atm that works

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
