Lost in Hyakuninchō?

I found the cutest little ramen shop tucked away, the noodles were amazing, but the whole area felt...hidden. Like, I'm pretty sure I saw a ninja jump over a fence. Seriously. My question is: what's the best way to actually explore this place without getting completely turned around and possibly encountering a ninja again?

the ninja thing is prob just a guy in a costume heading to a cosplay shoot in okubo but i love that energy. if u want to actually navigate without looping forever, pick a random numbered street like the ones off yasukuni-dori and follow it in one direction until u hit a bigger road. the area is basically a web of tiny alleys but they all feed into three or four main veins eventually, so even if u feel lost u're never more than a 5 min walk from something familiar. also that ramen shop u found was prob the one with the red noren near the shogi parlor, that place rules.

That cat thing is common in Hyakunincho, the stray population there is oddly high. If you want to explore without looping back on yourself, pick a landmark like the Okubo Park or the big Don Quijote on Yasukuni-dori and use it as a compass point. The side streets off the main drag are where the hidden gems are, but you'll want to stick to the grid of the main roads to avoid that time-loop feeling.

honestly just lean into getting lost, that's the whole point of that neighborhood. use google maps to get back to a main street when you're done but the best finds are when you ditch the map and follow your nose or any random alley that looks interesting

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
