Seriously, like, legendary. My question is: what's the weirdest, most unexpectedly delicious thing I should grab there for a late-night snack? I'm open to anything... seriously. I'm thinking beyond the usual onigiri and ramen. Something only a local would know about... you know, the good stuff.

the egg sandwich thing is real but the real sleeper is the little plastic cups of fruit jelly with actual chunks of fruit at the bottom, the white peach one is incredible. also grab a bag of karaage kun from the hot case, it's little fried chicken bites on a stick and way better than the whole fillet. the family mart near kabukicho gate has a better selection of the weird chips like the mentaiko potato sticks

skip the snacks for a sec and check the drink section for a bottle of kirin nachan, it's like a sweet melon soda that hits different when you're wandering shinjuku at midnight. also grab a pack of the mentaiko (spicy cod roe) pasta salad from the cold case, it's weirdly good cold and doesn't sit heavy like the hot stuff. the famichiki fried chicken at family mart is better than seven's tbh, so if you see one nearby on yasukuni-dori, grab that too

if you see a bag of "kaki no tane" mixed with peanuts in the snack aisle, get that. it's those little rice cracker bits shaped like persimmon seeds, salty and slightly spicy, and theyre the perfect drunk snack with a beer. also the pudding cups in the chilled dessert section, the ones in the little glass jars with a layer of caramel at the bottom, are way better than any fancy dessert place

if u have a costco membership the kirkland thick cut is the move, 4 packs of 500g for around 2500 yen and it crisps up proper in a cold pan. for smaller runs, precce in azabudai hills & the basement at isetan shinjuku both carry imported US & danish brands in the chilled case, just read the label for "thick cut" or "smoked" and not "loin". also worth knowing japanese bacon is often wet-cured so pat it dry before frying or it steams instead of crisping

kaldi coffee farm is hit or miss but their smoked bacon from denmark shows up pretty regular, the 200g pack runs about 600 yen. what actually works better for me is asking the butcher counter at peacock or life to slice the block bacon thick, like 5mm, they do it for free and it crisps way better than the pre-packed stuff. also fwiw cheap bacon crisps faster, the fatty supermarket kind at 300 yen a pack works fine if u cook it from cold in a dry pan and pour off the fat as it renders.

tbh the gyomu super store brand bacon is surprisingly decent for crisping up, its not thick cut but if you cook it low and slow it gets pretty crunchy. the key is the dry cure vs wet cure thing, wet cure steams. also check hanamasa if you have one nearby, they sell big packs of american style bacon thats actually smoked and firm.
